Definition (Characteristic Of A Ring)
The characteristic of a ring $R$, written $\text{char } R$, is the smallest positive integer $n$ such that $n\cdot a = a+a+\cdots+a=0$ for all $a\in R$. If no such integer exists, then we say $R$ has characteristic zero.
